The Tamil Nadu Government is persistent in making the lives of its people harmonious and easy. In accordance to this objective the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa launched the Free Bus Pass Scheme for students. This has been done to make the process of education a lot more cheaper by cutting down on transportation costs. The scheme has been launched by the joint effort of the State Education Department.
The free bus passes are being made for all students that fall in the age-group of 6-14 years. Using a bus pass, a school student can easily travel to school without having to spend money on bus fares. This smart card that is been issued will be applicable for all government transport buses that are functional in the state and in all the districts of the state.
The Tamil Nadu Free students bus passes will be available for all school students studying in Classes 1 through 8th. This will facilitate journey from home to school and back for all the card holders. The smart card is valid till 31st December 2020.

In the year 2015-16 the service was spread and availed by estimated 28.05 lakh students of the state. This was the statistic for the academic year 2015-16. This year when CM Jayalalithaa re-launched the scheme for 2016-17 academic years, she handed over five smart cards to beneficiaries. On the event, the CM also presented the statistics for this year.
This year the government and state education department will join hands to hand out 31.11 lakh students. For the same the government has passed a Rs. 504.31 crore budget. The budget for last academic year was Rs. 480 crore.
Free Bus Pass Scheme Tamilnadu -Smart Cards for Students
The Tamil Nadu State Government, headed under CM Jayalalithaa is making reforms at a spectacular pace. To make education prices bearable for all students, the government released a new scheme. Under this scheme, the government will issue smart cards for all private as well as public schools in the state. These smart cards will allow the students to travel for free in the state corporation buses to and from the schools. This was a necessity as many schools are placed closer to towns and students that are from distant villages had to travel a long way to reach schools.
With the scheme in action, the transportation fee will be relieved from the heads of parents. This will allow more children to reach their schools safely and timely, so that their education does not suffer.
How do Students Apply for Free Bus Pass Scheme in TN
- Children can sign up for free bus passes by applying to their school principals.
- Parents will have to submit written application along with address proof and a passport size photograph of the child.
